Lipomas & skin lesions

diagnosis, treatment & management

In addition to his colorectal expertise, Mr Nizar is a highly experienced general surgeon, providing definitive treatment for common abdominal and soft-tissue conditions.

Lipomas and Skin Lesions

Benign fatty lumps (lipomas) and other skin tags or cysts can be bothersome or unsightly. Mr Nizar provides precise surgical excision for these lesions, often under local anaesthetic, ensuring minimal scarring and a professional aesthetic result.

What are Lipomas and Skin Lesions?

Skin lesions and lipomas are highly common, usually benign (non-cancerous) growths that develop on or just beneath the skin. While they are frequently harmless, they can cause discomfort, catch on clothing, or cause cosmetic concern. Mr Nizar provides expert assessment and precise surgical removal for a wide range of benign skin conditions.

  • Lipomas: These are soft, fatty lumps that grow slowly just under the skin. They are typically painless, doughy to the touch, and move easily when pressed. They commonly appear on the neck, shoulders, back, arms, and thighs.

  • Skin Tags & Seborrheic Keratoses: Small, harmless growths that hang off the skin or appear as raised, wart-like spots. They often develop in areas where skin rubs against skin or clothing, such as the neck, armpits, and groin.

  • Epidermoid and Sebaceous Cysts: Sac-like lumps under the skin that contain a thick, cheesy substance. They can sometimes become inflamed, tender, or infected, requiring medical attention.

Why treatment is needed

While most lipomas and skin lesions do not pose a serious medical threat, they rarely disappear on their own. Treatment is typically recommended if the growth:

  • Becomes painful, tender, or inflamed.

  • Grows rapidly or changes in appearance.

  • Is located in an awkward position that restricts movement or causes friction.

  • Causes distress or self-consciousness regarding your appearance.

How it is treated

Mr Nizar performs minor surgical procedures to remove these growths cleanly and efficiently under local anaesthetic.

  • Excision Surgery: For lipomas and cysts, a small, precise incision is made over the lump. The entire growth is carefully removed to minimise the chances of it returning. The wound is then closed with fine stitches designed to optimise cosmetic healing.

  • Shave or Snip Excision: For superficial skin lesions and skin tags, the growth can often be removed flush with the skin level, requiring minimal or no stitches.

Aftercare & Recovery

Lipoma and skin lesion removals are straightforward, day-case procedures performed in an outpatient setting. You will be able to return home immediately after the treatment.

Most patients can return to work and light, everyday activities the very next day. Depending on the location of the lesion, any stitches used are typically removed or dissolve within 7 to 14 days, leaving a faint scar that fades significantly over time.

Tailored Minor Surgical Solutions

Every skin growth is unique, and so is every patient's skin type. Mr Nizar provides a tailored approach to minor surgery, ensuring that incisions are placed discretely along the natural crease lines of your skin where possible. By combining meticulous surgical technique with high-quality aftercare, he focuses on achieving the best structural and cosmetic outcome, allowing you to return to your normal routine with confidence.
